What is the effect called where it makes the noise sound muffled and then it gradually becomes clearer?

It sounds muffled like when your in a line for getting into a club but you can still hear the muffled song, and then you enter the club and sound becomes clear and norma; that would be the best example I could think of. So yeah what is the effect called? Please & Thank You ^_^
