Are Used Games Reliable?

I just bought a used game from GoHastings.com (a href="https://www.gohastings.com/)." rel="nofollow"https://www.gohastings.com/)./a It's the same as the Hastings store, right? Anyway, i bought the same game from Ebay/Amazon (one of them) and when it got here, it was scratched up and didn't play. I can understand why Ebay/Amazon didn't work because i'm getting it form users (other people) and they could have lied about the condition. But would Hastings lie? An international selling store? Would they take back a used game without checking to see if it works and sell it? I'm worried that i may have wasted my money on a game that may not work. I mean, i haven't gotten it yet, but is it possible that it won't work?
